What is APPX Report Writer?
APPX Report Writer (formerly known as APPX SQL) is an enduser oriented report generator that allows endusers trained in its use to define their own reports, without programmer assistance. These ad-hoc reports may be run one time, or they may be saved to be run upon request.

APPX Report Writer is bundled with APPX, and is automatically installed when APPX itself is installed. Just follow the steps found at http://www.appx.com/assets/asp/dynamic_generator.asp?pageid=654 on our web page to install APPX Report Writer.

(Answer) (Category) FAQ's - APPX Software, Inc. : (Category) APPX Reportwriter :
Who can benefit from using APPX Report Writer?
Both the end user and the designer can benefit from using APPX Report Writer.

The end user can use APPX Report Writer to quickly create reports without submitting requests to the IT department and going through the steps of defining specifications, development, testing, and deployment. The user can create the report and print the results immediately.

The designer will enjoy the benefit of a lightened work load. When the users create their own reports the designer will be freed up to work on those more involved projects. No more valuable development time will be required to create a report and place it on a menu for a user to run it one time.

(Answer) (Category) FAQ's - APPX Software, Inc. : (Category) APPX Reportwriter :
How do I get started using APPX Report Writer?
To use Appx Query Report Writer it must first be set up by your Appx or System Administrator. The application is included with the Appx installation, so no other download is required. The steps to install APPX Report Writer can be found at http://www.appx.com/assets/asp/dynamic_generator.asp?pageid=654.

Once installed, access to the Report Writer menu must be added to your application. This step will require a designer with access to your application.

When that is done run your application and simply click on the Report Writer menu and follow the steps. The menus are presented in the order necessary to create a report and each step is preceeded with an instructional pop-up explaining the options available and what to do to complete that step.

(Answer) (Category) FAQ's - APPX Software, Inc. : (Category) APPX Reportwriter :
Is a design license needed to use APPX Report Writer?
No. While the Report Writer must be set up by an Appx Adminstrator and a design license is required to make the changes necessary to add the Report Writer to an existing application, no design right is required to create new reports. Any user with access to the application can process the screens necessary to create, save, and print reports designed by the application.

(Answer) (Category) FAQ's - APPX Software, Inc. : (Category) APPX Reportwriter :
Do I need to know how to design a report in APPX to use the Report Writer?
You do not need to know anything about APPX Application Design in order to create a report using the Report Writer. The Report Writer will walk you through each step of designong the report. The simple instructions will step you through identifying the data you want to see, the order in which it should be shown, and any sorting or selection criteria you would like to use. The Report Writer will then create all the Appx processes required to run the report.

To use the APPX Report Writer, just as with any report generator, you will need to be able to identify the files and fields that contain the data you wish to see. With a little instruction on the structure of the database you should be able to quickly create reports.

(Answer) (Category) FAQ's - APPX Software, Inc. : (Category) APPX Reportwriter :
Can I store my reports with my other applications?
The installation instructions have me create a new application and database for the Report Writer. Can I override this and use my existing application and database?
Appx Software highly recommends that you follow the instructions as written and create a separate application and database for the APPX Report Writer. Remember, the Report Writer is an application written in Appx, just like your own application, and is subject to the same rules and constraints as your applications.

If you have payroll and general ledger applications you would not consider having both stored in a single application or database. You may share information between the two, but would keep them separate. Think of the Report Writer as another application which gets its information from other databases. As it is less confusing to keep the payroll and general ledger as separate applications, it is also less confusing to keep the Report Writer as a separate application.

(Answer) (Category) FAQ's - APPX Software, Inc. : (Category) APPX Reportwriter :
Can I access all my applications from one copy of APPX Report Writer?
If all of your applications are installed under the same version and database you can install the APPX Report Writer once and access all of your data. If you have more than one version of your applications and would like to use the Report Writer for each, you must install the Report Write application for each version.

While Appx allows you to access data across versions and databases, that is controlled by the designer through code. The Report Writer is an application written specifically to create reports without coding and coding knowledge. As such the user that is creating a report does not access to the means to cross versions to retrieve data.

(Answer) (Category) FAQ's - APPX Software, Inc. : (Category) APPX Reportwriter :
What type of training will a user need?
Each step of creating a report is preceded by instructions for that step. Most users should need minimal training in order to use the Report Writer beyond the basics of how to maneuver in Appx.
The user will also need to be familiar with the file structures within the database. Users may require instruction on file and field naming conventions within your design environment in order to locate the desired data.

(Answer) (Category) FAQ's - APPX Software, Inc. : (Category) APPX Reportwriter :
Using the Export feature of Appx Report Writer.
Appx Report Writer has a really handy tool for exporting data from APPXIO files. Create a report (query) as normally selecting the fields in the order you wish them to appear in the exported file (use the Select function). After all the fields are selected click on Export Options and enter your specifications. The ‘Disposition of Export File?’ specification has three options, Leave, Upload, and Upload & Open. The Leave option will export the data to APPX_PATH/PRINT/uuu/uuuQUERY.xxx, where uuu is the Appx userid and xxx is the file extension you specified. Upload and Upload & Open using the Java Client will export to ../Documents and Settings/UserName/.appx/cache/localhost/ver/Data/rptdata.xxx.

Important, after specifying the Export Options you must Run the report. A pop-up window will tell you where the file was saved using the Leave and Upload options. Hint. If you specify Upload & Open you can click save as to see where the file is located.
