1) Rename or move your existing $APPXPATH/winprint.exe file. 2) Move the file winprint24.exe into the place of the former $APPXPATH/winprint.exe. (winprint24.exe

    must be renamed to winprint.exe, and reside in your $APPXPATH directory, in order to be accessible.) 

New Features:

Version 2.4 introduces the following enhancements:

Running WINPRINT24.exe without parameters (or clicking on it from Explorer) now gives you a list of all available options (in addition to the version number).

        

        "-raw" will pass report to printer without translation.
        This allows you to embed 'escape' codes in your report 
        file.
        "-interactive=none" suppresses display of Windows in-
        progress messages.

Version 2.3 introduces support for the SCRATCH Disposition attribute, and will allow CANCELing of a spooling print request, if the FORMs or PRINTER options specify '-interactive', as does Version 2.0 introduced the following new options (which can be specified on the command line, in the form options field, or in the printer options field):

-interactive - Invokes the printer setup dialog for the selected printer. You can use this to override the specifications given by the configuration file, and to select options which are not otherwise supported by winprint.

If you have difficulty getting any of the "-form_*" switches described below to work, you can use the -interactive switch at runtime to perform any function a given printer driver supports.

-source= - Can be used to select the paper source. Valid values vary by printer driver. Winprint will recognize the following paper sources:

Windows has a set of pre-defined forms. (Under Windows NT, you can also define additional custom forms.) Use this -form_id= option to select a pre-defined or NT-custom form. Valid forms vary by printer driver.

-length= Specifies length and width of the form in either

-width= inches or millimeters. If the value ends in an 'm' (for example 250m), it is specified in millimeters. If it ends in 'i' (for example 11i), or no unit is specified, the value is considered to be in inches.

Since most printer drivers do not support custom form sizes, winprint will try to exactly match the given form size to one of the pre-defined forms above, if possible. If winprint cannot match the length and width to a form above, it will attempt to pass to the Windows Print manager a manual specification of the form length and width.

Due to a bug in Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0, this manual length and width passing to printer drivers may fail. If it fails, Windows will select default length/width. This may be worked around by using "-interactive".

-ansi The print file is assumed to contain text in an OEM character set and will be translated to ANSI while printing

-oem The print file is assumed to contain text in the ANSI character set and will be translated to an OEM character set while printing

-log= Use this flag to specify the pathname of a debugging log if you experience trouble with winprint. For example:

    -log=c:\winprint.log 

If you need technical support, please gather a debugging log to help the support personnel diagnose your problem.

Winprint 2.0 also fixes a problem under Windows NT: winprint would try to use a custom form size, which is not supported by most printer drivers.

Please note that many of the options listed above are not supported by some printer drivers. Also, some options are only allowed in specific combinations. For example, some printer drivers will not allow you to specify "-form=DL Envelope", without changing the paper source to "Envelope" or "Manual Envelope" (using -source= ). Some printer drivers use non-standard properties which winprint cannot access programmatically. The only way to use these properties is to specify "-interactive", and select the properties at run-time.

Manual operation:

Normally, winprint.exe is invoked automatically when the jobstream or enduser submits the printfile to the operating system to be queued to print. Winprint operates upon an ASCII file containing text to be printed, and on a configuration file. The user can get the pathname/filename of a printfile to be printed at runtime by displaying the report to the screen, then pressing the HELP key followed by option/5. This displays the printfile's pathname and filename at the bottom of the screen.

The APPX print manager also creates a printing configuration file, after the editor displaying the report on the screen is (optionally) invoked. This configurations file is located in the same directory as the original printfile. It is named the same as the printfile, but with '.cfg' appended. The configuration file contains printer setup information, as obtained from the 'Printer Options', 'Forms Options', and user-interactive printing selections. It is a readable and modifiable text file. winprint.exe can be manually invoked, with the following format: winprint.exe -config=<config.file> <print.file>

This will cause 'print.file' to be submitted to the Windows Print Manager, using options specified in 'config.file'.
